AFAN Hosts Special Screening of “Milk” and Q&A with Project AIDS Memorial Quilt Founder Cleve Jones

Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) will host a special screening of the Academy Award- winning biopic “Milk” at Inspire Theatre on Friday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m.Notable HIV activist and founder of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial QuiltCleve Jones will host a live Q&A session following the movie.

 

Based on the life and assassination of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California, the film received Academy Awards for Best Actor for Sean Penn and Best Original Screenplay for Dustin Lance Black. Emile Hirsch portrayed Jones, who was interning in Milk’s office before his assassination.

 

Jones’ career as an activist began during the turbulent 1970s, and in 1985, he conceptualized the memorial quilt at a candlelight memorial for Milk. Today, the quilt is the world’s largest community arts project, honoring more than 85,000 Americans killed by AIDS.

 

In Las Vegas, Jones has helped build a coalition between the LGBT and labor communities in the Culinary Union. Their Health Fund was the first in Nevada to provide domestic partner health benefits.

 

Guests will enjoy complimentary popcorn from Popcorn Girl. The event is open to the public for a $10 donation to AFAN. Make a donation online to reserve seating at afanlv.donordrive.com/event/MILK/. Donations can also be made at the door, but seats will be filled based on availability.

 

The screening and Q&A will kick off the AIDS Walk weekend culminating in the walk at UNLV on Sunday, May 4.
